Team of 2017 Top Division 2 in the North of England Athletics League.

Winning leagues has become a habit to the green and white army of mighty Leigh Harriers – in 2014 they won the Northern Athletics Division 2 title, then Division 3 title in 2016 and on Saturday at Blackburn they regained their title of Champions of Division 2 in what was a very close match against some of the top teams in the north.

Dan Shannon had an outstanding afternoon breaking a long standing club record when in the 110mts hurdles he recorded a time of 16.5 sec for first place; Dan also won 2nd place in the 200mts 22.7 sec, 3rd in the 100mts 11.1 sec and 4th in the triple jump 11.25mts.

Phil Williams ran well over the hurdles for 2nd in the B 110 hurdles 25.2 sec, 2nd in the B 3000mts Steeple Chase 10.52.2 sec and 4th in the 400mts Hurdles 71.9.  Tommy Henders running both the 400 mts and 400mts hurdles ran 57.3 and 76.3 respectively.  Dave Smith ran a season’s best time in the 3000mts Steeple chase finishing 2nd in10:17.5.  The pressure was kept up in the field events with Karran Kapur-Walton winning the Pole Vault 3.60 mts; Wayne Todd 2nd in the Javelin 48.10mts, Simon Forster winning the B event 33.72mts and 5th in the Hammer 28.44mts, Dave Smith 2nd in the B event 20.10mts.  In the Discus Wayne Todd placed 4th 28.43mts, Peter Todd winning the B event 24.43mts.

Will Rawson and Joseph Wane both ran PBs in the 800 mts running 2:06.1 sec and 2:09.0 seconds respectively.  Tom Kneller 4:26.2 sec  and Liam Moore 4:35.4 sec  both competed in the 1500 mts to take 5th place, Liam then won 2nd place in the High Jump 1.45mts.  Josh Pardoe was 5th in the A high jump 1.45 mts, ran 12.2 sec in the 100mts for 5th place.  In the 5000mts Will Rawson and Neil Pendlebury  both ran well in times of 15:47.3 and 15:54.3 respectively.

In the Ladies match Leigh’s middle distance runners scored well for the team with Abigail Howarth 2nd in the 1500 mts 4:42.5 sec with Louisa Thompson 3rd in the B race 5:18.00 sec; Louisa then went on to win the B 3000 mts 10:57.6 sec.  Olivia Stones ran a personal best of 10:43.2 sec in the A 3000mts in 2nd place and 3rd in the 800 mts 2:38.0 sec.  Courtney Donald placed 4th in the 400mts and 800mts in times of 63.8 sec and 2:23.5 sec.  Emma McIntyre in her first Northern League match was 2nd in the 400mts 67.5 sec and won the B high Jump 1.20mts.

Good points scoring came from the Leigh field team with Carla Winstanley 3rd in the Hammer 28.75mts, 3rd in the Shot 9.37mts and 4th in the Discus 22.58mts.  Carla Baines won the B Discus 21.35mts, Shot Putt 8.86mts and 2nd in the Javelin 26.17mts.  Emily Lewtas won the B Hammer competition 24.71mts and Javelin 3rd with a throw of 29.03mts, throwing senior weights in both competitions as an under 17 athlete! Emma Bilsbury cleared a seasons best in the Pole Vault winning with a 2.20mts clearance, also 3rd in the Triple Jump 8.88mts and 4th in the 400mts Hurdles 93.3 sec.  Leah Kinsella competed well for the team, 2nd in the Triple Jump B 8.06mts and 5th in the Long Jump 3.67mts. Wendy Laing won the High Jump 1.45mts and 6th in the Long Jump 4.61mts.  In the sprints Ella Unsworth placed 5th in the 100mts 13.00 sec and 4th in the 200mts 27.1 sec; Emily Touhey ran the B events, 6th in the 100mts 14.0 sec and 5th in the 200mts 29.7 sec.  The Leigh team will go to the playoffs to try to win a place in Division 1
