Derek Howarth, Leigh Harriers Hon President, sadly passed away today (23rd December 2022) age 92, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
Derek was a life-long member of Leigh Harriers and will leave a legacy which most athletes only dream of. His profile on https://thepowerof10.info/athletes/profile.aspx?athleteid=7565 only tells the story of Derek’s running career from the year 2000 when as V65 he clocked 2:45.65 in the indoor 800m; his last year of competing 2013 as a V80 saw him place 1st in the BMAF XC Championships, a race he will have savoured as he beat 2 of his lifelong rivals. It was soon after this that Derek suffered a stroke shortenening his career, or to be sure he would have been running to this day.
