Leigh Harriers took the team prize in the final Central Lancs Grand Prix Road Race at the Gin Pit 5 Mile Trails race on Sunday. Dave Smith, Leigh most improved runner of the season consolidated his overall third position in the league; with a reversal of the previous day’s result, Dave won third place in the race in a time of 27:26 just holding off Neil Pendlebury in 4th place in 27:30. Phil Williams made sure of the team prize with a determined run for 6th place in 28:38, an outstanding performance from the three runners who ran the previous day in the Red Rose Cross Country at Leigh. Another Harrier who had put himself on the line the previous day was Richard Smith, running well for 16th place 30:49, James Cooke won the O/50 prize both in the race and the overall series running a time of 31:01, John Howarth finished 2nd O/50 runner in the race 32:24, Joseph Dillon 7th O/45 in 33:42, Craig Elsby 36:31, Garry Baines was 7th 0/55 in 37:16 followed by Derek Coop in his second race of the weekend who was 8th 0/55 in 38:40. Leighs’ first lady in the race was Carole Baines in 39:40, Fiona Steele was 2nd Junior lady in the race in her first run for the club 40:24, Paul Jackson recorded a time of 46:32, Dianne Denny was 13th senior lady in a time of 49:41. This was a good finish to the season with the harriers’ team taking second overall place in the League and also winning several individual prizes.
