Road & Cross Country Sat 16th Feb 2019

Leigh Harrier Lauren Heyes – running for the English team in the Armagh 3km International Road race in Ireland – ran an excellent time of 9:16 finishing in 6th place in a top-class field of international runners.  Abigail Howarth, running in the same race, crossed the line in 18th place running for Leigh Harriers beating several of the English team in 9:31.

Laura Riches – in her preparation for the Manchester Marathon – took a break from training to run in the Wexham Half Marathon.  The distance of 13.1 miles was well-judged by Laura and her winning time of 1.19:39 made her a convincing winner and broke her own previous personal best time by over 2 minutes.

Leigh’s U20 Olivia Stones ran well at the Alsager 5 mile road race finishing 2nd lady in a time of 29:04 placing her 6th on the Run Britain rankings 1st Under 20 lady.

Meanwhile back on the cross country scene the young Leigh Harriers team ran well at the South East Lancs Cross Country meeting at Yarrow Park Chorley, and won 4 races during a very successful afternoon of competition.

Success came in the first race of the day in the Boys U11 race.  Sam Barlow won his fourth race out of four in a time of 8.29; Sam is unbeaten in the overall series and takes the overall title.  In the girls U11 race Amy Hewitt had a good run to finish in 10th place clocking 8.00 with Lauren Hewitt in 21st place 8:38. 

In the boys U13 race, Ethan Davies maintained his second place in the league series by racing to 4th place in a time of 8:08 securing his silver medal placing.  William Cooper ran well for 15th place in a time of 11:52.

The Leigh team’s second winner of the day was Nieve Robinson racing in the U13 Girls race; her 1st place in a time of 10:21 gives her 5th place over the 4 race series.

Mellissa Ince was on top form and in good racing mode winning the U15 girls race by a huge distance running a time of 18:00 for the 3 mile course and making her winner of the overall series in the U15 girls by racing to 3rd, 2nd, and then 1st in three out of the four races.

Leah Peploe had an outstanding run in the senior ladies over a two lap 4 mile course winning in a time of 26:54 and bringing Leigh Harriers total wins to four.

Richard Smith competing in the Parbold Hill 6.75 miles race ran an excellent time of 42:1, finishing in 4th place in a field of 460 finishers.

In the Central Lancs 5km road race Kristian Wade placed 3rd Junior in the race and overall 14th in a time of 19:18 with Sam Wade 5th junior overall  30th 20:40, both showing good early season form.
