The first race in a series of eleven Central Lancs Grand Prix Road Races was hosted by Bolton Harriers at Leverhulm Park on Sunday, and in near perfect conditions for running, over 300 runners toed the line for the start of the 5k race.
Starting with a lap of the track the runners spread out with sixteen year old Callum McCormick in the lead group of three, they quickly pulled away from the main group; McCormick – using the race as a race fitness exercise – pressed the leaders all the way to the finish recording an excellent time of 16:18 to finish in 3rd place. The Leigh team packed well behind him, Neil Pendlebury not at his best over the shorter distances ran well recording a time of 16:35 for 6th place, club captain Phil Williams finishing well in 8th place in a time of 16:44, narrowly beating Bolton Harriers in their own back yard to the senior men’s team prize. Leigh were also first B team in the race with Tommy Henders 17:16 12th, David Smith 17:30 13th, and Alex Urmston 18:21 in 24th place being the B team counters. Other good runs came from Jimmy Cooke who was the third over 50 in the race in a time of 18:45, fourteen year old Kristian Wade in his first race with the seniors was 6th under 20 runner in a time of 18:59, Allan Smith the first over 55 in the race was 54th 19:59, Garry Dutton 59th 20:08 was followed by Garry Baines 23:28, Neil Wade 25:47, and Paul Jackson running a personal best time of 27:58.
The Ladies team finished 4th overall and 2nd vet’s team. Donna Ince who’s improvement over the last few months has been astonishing ran a personal best time of 21:00 minutes for 5th place, Carole Baines was second counter for the team in 20th place in a time of 22:37, Ursula Mellor 28th 23:47 and Lisa Alexander 28:42 in 44th place competed the team.
The next race in the series is at Smithhills coaching house The Trotters 5 miles a a very testing 5 mile course on Sunday 1st of March.
