Sixteen year old Leigh Harrier Keely Hodgkinson has topped the European U17 rankings over the weekend, winning the England Athletics U20 Women’s 800m Championships at Bedford on Sunday in a time of 2.04.42 sec – she now has the qualification times for the European U18 championships in Hungary and the World U20 championships in Finland.
Keely has progressed over the last few months running in BMC races at Sports City and Watford slowly bringing her times down to below the Europe and World qualification standard. The qualification races were held at Bedford International Stadium in the U20 England Athletics Championships in which heats on Saturday and finals on Sunday were contested for the U20 800 mts races.
Keely ran a circumspect race in heat 1 just doing enough to get in the final on Sunday running a time of 2:09.0 for 2nd place. Sunday’s finals day saw eight of the best athletes in the country line up to try and win a place on the National team; running a well-judged race and going through 400 mts in 62.6 sec with 50 mts to go it was Keely who was in the ascendency. She raced away from her rivals to clock an impressive 2.04.42 sec a world qualification time and top of the rankings.
